When was that? The reason some lefties give human rights abuses in the name of Islam a free pass is because of postcolonial guilt and confused ethics around anti-racism. https://twitter.com/Ugh_hhhh/status/936534374182465536 …

The liberal leftie problem is a failure to distinguish between sets of illiberal ideas and groups of people who may or may not hold them. They see criticising the ideas as attacks on those groups. It should be clear how far-right attacks on those groups feed into this.

The solution is for liberals to apply their liberal principles consistently by addressing problems within Islam in the same way they do illiberal ideas within Christianity or within secular ideologies and supporting liberal Muslims, liberal Christians, liberals generally.pic.twitter.com/pobfIQFyL9

The failure of the left to admit that there are any problems within Islam just causes us to lose people to the right because they are at least acknowledging this. And the right we are losing them to is a populist and extreme right. Fixing this problem alone could change the game.

Just by this tweet alone, how are you not a part of the new right?

If you define the new right as anyone who thinks the left needs to address problems with Islam honestly and counter the rise of the populist right, I am it. But in standard evaluations, I come out as centre-left - culturally liberal, economically strongly social democrat.

The populist right is the only politically successful platform critical of Islam. That doesn't mean they are the only existing one, just the only ones able to gain any traction under the current political climate. Why is the UK not even safe for apostates, for example?

Legally, it is. Bad actors still exist. In the same way, rape is illegal but it still happens & this doesn't indicate a rape culture.

There is no effective defence of religious freedom for Muslims. That would require that the tight-knit Muslim communities accept secularism, or that the nominally secular government adopt effective measures to prevent retaliation against apostates. Instead, Sadiq Khan.
