Thank you! But how do we find out what the extension is from the mass and the constant?

Well, what's the problem? Mass hanging on a spring in equilibrium?

Oh I can't get a screenshot of it on her laptop! She's been asked to work out an equation that requires knowing the mass, the constant and the extension but has only been given the first two.

      Just solve via dimensional analysis!

I have no idea what is going on. I think Lucy knows what she doesn't know but she's shit at explaining it to me! If that problem comes up in the test, she's just going to have to leave it.

Dimensional analysis is a cool trick where you take your givens and calculate other necessary values out of them. Like turning distance (m) and time (s) into velocity (m/s)! Tons of physics problems require it.

Also good for guessing the answer - but I was being a bit facetious. It's a bit advanced for Helen's daughter's age.

This is not the time for being facetious! Physics makes me cranky and it seems this is hereditary! I've no patience for all these figures & squiggles. If it can't explain itself sensibly in words, it should probably be ignored until it can.

OK, this is an energy balance problem! The gravitational potential energy is assumed to be fully converted into the spring energy. Which gives you the extension.
