I'm not saying we should let them define their socially recognized gender identity. But society's definition of their identity does impinge pretty strongly on their subjective identity.
If you mean people will say they feel invalidated because large sections of society don't believe in their gender identity, of course they will. They're not tho. They are still valid & other people are allowed to have their own views.

OK, we’ve circled back. I agree that they’re not “invalidated”. But I’ll just say again, that’s a glib way of skimming over the profound effect that social classification has on subjective identity.

Well, I dont think it is. We need to end this stupid hyperbolic war over what people are allowed to think & say about gender & encourage being yourself anyway. Society protects ppl's right to do this now.
