I always purposely do lower case "g" for god.

Depends on if it's being used as a proper noun or not for me. I still capitalize Zeus and Harry Potter even though they don't exist.

Which god? When you talk about "the sun" you don't capitalize "sun", because there are many suns, you use it's real unique name: "Sol". Allah, is not the same as Vishnu, yet arguably both could be "God". If you are talking about a unique god use his proper name: Yahweh.

Both/all of his names should be capitalized if they're being used as a proper noun.

No, "sun" is not a unique name, neither is "god".

Sun is the label for an object and isn't being used as a proper noun. If someone uses "God" as a name for their deity, it should be capitalized. This is extremely simple grammar and not up for debate. http://grammarist.com/style/god-capitalization/ …

Well, yeah. You'd say 'the sun' and 'the god' as common nouns but if you used either as a name - Dear Sun, please shine. Dear God, please help me - it becomes a proper noun.

Exactly. I'm beyond belief that this seems so hard to understand. I'm pretty sure I literally learned this in 4th or 5th grade.

Yes. Feel superior for pointing out something 3rd graders know. You need more than 3rd grade intellect to understand the point though.

I don’t think I’m superior. Do we agree that this is capitalized correctly though? —> I turned to my mom and said, “Hi, Mom.”

Depends on your definition of correct. Gramatically yes, but it's wrong for other reasons. If a 3rd grader knows what's gramatically correct, that tells you how important it is. The point is deeper, and you don't get it.

All these years I've suffered rain and clouds, and all I had to do was politely write "Dear Sun, please shine"? Wow, there goes the last 20 years of seasonal affective disorder. 😭
