So we have an obligation to improve ourselves, but it's fine if we die out? I'm not seeing the connection here

There isn't one. Just as every human has an obligation to care for the humans they create but not an obligation to create humans so we have an obligation to make things better for humans that exist but not to ensure that we always do.

The suffering of individuals matters to me but the fact that they're part of the same species as me doesn't really

The thing I always wonder abt that...you don't think we should privilege consciousness, in the sense of self-awareness?

I don't really think so, it's still wrong to hurt someone who's unconscious or self-unaware. Like, a newborn baby or someone who is asleep :P

Lol, gotcha. But in the long-term, aren't we obligated to privilege our species over others b/c of our unique self-consciousness?

Well yeah I do think humans are pretty exceptional in terms of potential benefits to the rest of the world, but if we were surpassed in intelligence by another species then I'm not sure it would matter if we naturally died out without suffering.

If there's no sense in perpetuating the species, what i the sense in perpetuating ourselves? It's still the act of perpetuating the species, but on a shorter timescale.
