I don't actually see a moral imperative to perpetuate the species, let alone my own race, culture, nationality.

You’re ignoring the demographic, financial and economic impacts. We are so leveraged that the aging of the population with collapse our financial system. The pensions are the canary in the coal mine.

Those are the practical issues I mentioned.

Missed the entire thread, Twitter newby that I am. There’s also the psychological need to see our society survive and our values passed down. Since only “western” societies are experiencing this effect, it’s likely they will not survive intact but will be subsumed by others
-
Yes, but this psychological need is neutral. If someone doesn't have it, they don't need to have kids for others who do.

I've also always been confused by this in secular people. Seems to me to stem from unrecognised dualism. If there are souls queueing up waiting to be born, it would hold. If not, not sure how it does.

The danger with declining birth rates is that it is the educated and secular who are declining.

I will somewhat disagree in as much that I'd rather than inferior cultures out compete through indoctrinating infants. I would hate to see the world become a regressive caliphate, for instance. I'd hope that the IDEAS will win though, w/ no need to rely on competitive breeding :P
