I don't think it is established that women are less happy than women in previous generations at all. Surveys which suggest this could well depict higher expectations of happiness and more encouragement to express dissatisfaction.

What you are describing, I believe, is "synthetic happiness." There is a very interesting Ted talk on it. Choice-overload is stressful.

I think about this constantly. We (the lucky west) have forgotten "enough". And the endless pursuit of more/different/better seems to not only be making us miserable, but also blind to our amazing good fortunes. I loathe most limits, but wonder if they're actually "the answer".
