"By the time of the hunts, 4 out of every 5 victims were women (usually lower class & elderly) in places like England, with that number being reported jumping up to as high as 90% in other countries" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch_trials_in_the_early_modern_period … You cant know the attitude of the women targetting them
-
Yes, that's more women than men. And not the strongest and most intelligent women were targetted. Personal grudges were the main cause.
-
How do you know that?
-
How do I know that 80-90% is more than half? Or that working class & elderly people were not the strongest in society? Or how do I know about the history of witches? I studied the period for 7 years. You don't need to spend that long tho.

It may be Poe's law but I'm getting a feeling of hostility? Might be me, and although I am interested in this I have to go out, hopefully I'll get back to it later.

You don't need me. Just read some good sources. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Malleus-Maleficarum-Jacob-Sprenger-ebook/dp/B018W9DY3U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1510328782&sr=8-1&keywords=hammer+of+the+witches … https://www.amazon.co.uk/History-Witchcraft-England-1558-1718/dp/1544282567/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1510328916&sr=1-6&keywords=history+of+witchcraft …

This. One interesting scenario that factored into a LOT of witchcraft convictions were that the accused witch was ugly, old, poor, uneducated, vulgar, mentally ill or a combination of these; she was also likely to be widowed or single.
-
Yes, but one thing that often gets overlooked is the women who claimed themselves to be witches or to be able to do magic. This is my period of study and one of my colleagues focuses on witchcraft. It was a trade for women with few other options.
-
Agreed. I think defining "witchcraft" is important too; huge difference between claiming to use herbs to cure scrofula and claiming to regularly fuck Satan
