I'm reading Robert Sapolksy's: Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst and found this particularly interesting.pic.twitter.com/2r6X6HTelc

It would suggest that Social Justice activists would do better to present their case calmly and call on people's more rational cognitive empathy than take highly emotive approaches which call on emotional empathy.

This is counterintuitive. Natural to think, 'If I can only make you feel how I do, you'll prioritise helping me.' Instead, it could cause avoidance. I suspect they'd say that people should battle that. In fact, they do say living with the discomfort is virtuous.

Some validity in that. Nevertheless, strategy is important if you want to get anywhere.

Anyway, you might say that reading this passage and having this thought does not count as the 'unless something major happens' reason I gave as an exception for my staying offline and working but, in fact, it does. So there.

Bob Sapolksy was my interim advisor when I first started grad school - he's one of the most balanced and insightful people I've ever met

He once had a long talk with me about stress and being a PhD candidate and why it was so import to not get too caught up in everything - meant a lot to me then and now

I'm assuming you already know about Paul Bloom's ("Against Empathy") fascinating work on this, but in case not, here's an easy way in:https://youtu.be/yhCGmDJQRpc
