For the hundredth time, it is not hypocritical to be an ardent defender of free speech and also block people you don't want to hear from.

This is a fundamental misunderstanding of what people who believe in the importance & value of the free exchange of ideas advocate.

It's akin to mistaking 'don't censor, punch or punish people for their ideas' for 'let's hear everybody out & give value to their ideas.'

People have a right to decide what they do & don't want to listen to. They don't have the right to decide what others do & don't listen to.

People will block you if you pester them tediously or abusively and don't take a hint that they don't find you worth talking to.

You can't force people to find you thoughtful or interesting. You are not being censored if they opt out of hearing you.

Blocking someone on social is akin to not going to their public talk. It's when you decide not to hear that person but don't stop anyone else

Ppl who criticise banning, no-platforming, obstructive protests on campus etc do not criticise ppl who decide not to hear talk themselves.

This is what we should all do. Take responsibility for what we hear by being available or unavailable to it, going to it or staying away.

We all censor in this way because we don't and can't be open to every kind of opinion on every topic ever. We must be selective.

If you are screaming 'hypocrisy' because someone has decided not to hear you,I can only suggest becoming more interesting or getting over it

Why is the Mute button not sufficient for your needs here? For the reasons I've seen described below, seems like it would be to me.

They don't go away then. They argue with other people on the thread and I still have to see the same old crap being discussed.

What if someone gets invited into someone else's house to talk about viewpoints I disagree with. Can't I smash their windows in?

I block quite a lot now. I have persistent pests who simply aren't worth talking to but won't go away. Feel entitled to be heard.
