I wonder about the psychology of people who are angrily resistant to the idea that we have made any progress in human wellbeing & rights.

That's uncharitable. One explained to me that if we think of ourselves as doing better than we used to, we'll get complacent & stop trying

Whereas 'Everything was terrible & it still is no matter what we do' is more likely to inspire people to give up & stop trying.

They have a special skill: seeing objective positive fact (e.g. increased longevity), ignoring them, and talking about unprovable systems that allegedly are getting worse instead.
