I wonder about the psychology of people who are angrily resistant to the idea that we have made any progress in human wellbeing & rights.

It almost feels as though they need everything to be awful and oppressive & can't bear the thought that we might be making good progress.

That's uncharitable. One explained to me that if we think of ourselves as doing better than we used to, we'll get complacent & stop trying

I'm not sure that's good psychology. I think seeing how far we've come already can be very inspirational.

Whereas 'Everything was terrible & it still is no matter what we do' is more likely to inspire people to give up & stop trying.

I was so struck by Helen Dunmore's Glad of These Times when I heard it on the radio a couple of days ago, I searched for and capped it...pic.twitter.com/CtkyIR8w9I

The point being, you don't tend to hear a lot of poetry so lyrically positive about the benefits of modernity.

Yes, and if society isn't awful and oppressive we will damn well make it so just so we can complain again.

But these people wouldn't be special if they didn't have 'victim cred'. Or communal guilt. They'd just have to live their ordinary lives!

This! It follows from that other flawed notion that the same patriarchal structures are present everywhere (presumably to the same degree).

They have a special skill: seeing objective positive fact (e.g. increased longevity), ignoring them, and talking about unprovable systems that allegedly are getting worse instead.

Even if that's true, the positive progress in another area is happening.
