It almost feels as though they need everything to be awful and oppressive & can't bear the thought that we might be making good progress.

That's uncharitable. One explained to me that if we think of ourselves as doing better than we used to, we'll get complacent & stop trying

Whereas 'Everything was terrible & it still is no matter what we do' is more likely to inspire people to give up & stop trying.

Another reason is some on the left don't like conceding that progress has been made by capitalist states (because then who needs Marxism?)

Personally I feel that we're *starting* (key word here) to see losses in all those accomplishments, but only here in the West.
