I think the spirit of the argument is what is the legal status of children? Property? Chattel? With circumcision, who's penis is it?

If we designate children legally different, that can come from many places. Is it property rights of a parent? Is it competence?

Not as punishment, but I wouldn't do that to a kid either. If they have a phone, they didn't buy it. They don't own it.

Some animals require hitting to socialize. Not disciplining certain breeds of dog is abuse. Maybe boys need spanking but not girls.
