Whether you think it's OK to smack children or not, 'Because you'd be arrested if you did it to an adult' is not a workable justification.

I'd be arrested if I confined an adult to her room for the evening or took her technology away until she'd cleaned her room.

I think the spirit of the argument is what is the legal status of children? Property? Chattel? With circumcision, who's penis is it?

If we designate children legally different, that can come from many places. Is it property rights of a parent? Is it competence?

You may be legally allowed to confine and deny property to an incompetent adult, but you still can't hit them.

Hit a mentally impaired person? Sure, for all the same legal reasons as hitting anyone else.

But you'd take their stuff and lock them up to punish them?

Not as punishment, but I wouldn't do that to a kid either. If they have a phone, they didn't buy it. They don't own it.

Can we raise children without hitting them? I think there is a knowable scientific answer to this, like with dogs.

And that would be a better argument than 'because you can't get away with doing it to adults' which is my point.
