If we designate children legally different, that can come from many places. Is it property rights of a parent? Is it competence?

You may be legally allowed to confine and deny property to an incompetent adult, but you still can't hit them.

Surely those who pose a danger to themselves or others can be confined by force. Same logic applies to children.
