It's not surprising at all. But looseness of the term isn;t the reason for ppl being inconsistent on whether we shld criticise things. .

So now you've further abstracted from "ideologies" to "things". Of course ppl disagree about the ethics of criticizing different things.

Sets of ideas then. Systems of thought. And they should. My criticism is not of this. It's not admitting that's what they;re doing.

It's when they say 'Just don't ascribe to X belief system if you don't believe /like it!' but then criticise Y coz they don't believe/like

It appears inconsistent when you analyse it using your own classification of actions, but I'm sure it doesn't feel inconsistent to them.

Of course not. That's why I have to point out that it is. It's their own claim, not mine. 'If you don't like this ideology, leave it alone.'

However, the distinction is yours. You pointing outan inconsistency in your view of their actions doesn't necessarily affect theirs.

What do you mean? There is an inconsistency is someone argues that criticising ideas is bad but criticising ideas is also good.

E.g. they might think in terms of politics vs. religions, not seeing them as overlapping. Hence: no contradiction.

And then you come along and say, "hey, it's all just ideas!!" and they can't relate to that classification and don't accept it as valid.
