Helen Pluckrose Retweeted Alex Griswold, but Halloween-themed I guess

Mostly agree with this thread but also think this type of atheist critic of religion is largely Left before the Left moved.https://twitter.com/hashtaggriswold/status/923202079488970753 …

This piece on the sudden unpopularity of New Atheism is making the rounds, but misses (imo) the obvious explanation http://bit.ly/2yOItnC

Thread makes a lot of sense. Also feel the issue w/ "new atheism" is the high level of arrogance a lot of people have that fit that "group"

I don't think so particularly. They (we) were polemical & had those who took it to arrogant arseholery but less so than a lot of groups.

There are certainly other groups you could say are worse, they had a larger, time weathered foundation. New Ath. not so much.

I guess I just noticed it more & expected better, always felt one should act/be better than the "opponents"

So many read Dawkins or Hitchens & then they become these arrogant know-it-alls, it becomes a deterrent for others w/ similar interests.

I don't know how that works. If you're deterred from being an atheist coz you don't like polemical atheists, you're not actually an atheist

Not from being an atheist but being a part of or closely associated with those within a group.

My understanding is, based on how people talk about it, there's atheism & new atheism. (I truthfully don't know the difference)

There are lots of attitudes. New Atheism tends to put a high value on debunking irrational ideology. It's why they go for PoMo too

I get it. I take issue with the tone I've come across. Not going to convince many with hostility. Perhaps this is mostly my experience.

No, I agree completely. I wrote a thing abt this. The NA approach is more useful for helping ppl who already want to overcome religion.

Or are genuinely undecided about it. It helped me a lot. For persuading believers, other methods are needed.
