I'm sure it's true that more women take management roles in families. My own observation of my friends tells me it is.

But as a woman who doesn't, I can confirm that the world does not end if you are not a multi-tasking domestic goddess.

I don't think its the woman's job to be household manager or the man's to be managed and then blamed for not being the household manager.

I think most couples work this out between them. I am not an organised person. If everything depended on me, we'd be screwed, quite frankly.

Well, no. I've only forgotten to feed the child a couple of times & it was old enough to remind me, so it's all good.

I think with heterosexual couples, if one of them is more likely to want everything 'just so', it's more often the woman.

And if so, there's probably not much point in demanding your partner to be the same. Dave nags me about the kitchen cupboards now & then.

But he mostly now just accepts that these things don't matter to me & organises them himself whilst grumbling under his breath.

Some serious reality going on there. You may be the exception, but it’s reality for most women.
-
But why? What happens if they don't take responsibility for managing everything? I think women are more likely to be particular about this.
-
What happens? Things don’t get done.
-
Really? I think that's an extreme case. There are few men who would just let everything descend into dirt & chaos.
-
Usually, the reality is that the man has a lower standard of order & organisation than the woman but he still has one & its functional.
-
If by functional you mean no one dies, then yes.

my observations of straight couples line up with what you outline - even with a few that are flipped so that he's the planner.
-
But the dynamic is present in gay couples too - one is "the organised one", the other would starve if left alone.
-
Ha. Have to say, the gay couples whose homes I have visited have said to me very clearly 'Only men live here.' Functionally clean and yet...
-
A lack of attention to detail and embellishment seemed to be the difference. And yet many of the best interior designers are gay so...
-
Doing it for money and doing it for yourself are very different things.
