New Atheists have a naive view of history as progress. I'm more interested in the claim that they saw the Reformation as progress.

I genuinely don't think they do. I've had a hell of a job trying to convince them that reform can be helpful *as well as* eradicating relig.

I think it is worth listening to historians when they say - watch out! Even well-meaning attempts to reform religion can end in blood.
