Hmm. Do 'new atheists' generally think Protestantism is so much better than Catholicism? I'm not sure they do.https://twitter.com/holland_tom/status/923144447717789696 …

The Protestant Myth of Reformation overcoming a corrupt and oppressive Catholic church is usually held by Protestants, I find.

Certainly, they've been the ones to argue with me when I talk about the ways the emerging Protestantism was more authoritarian & forbidding.

I agree that the New Atheists are/were liberal in the old sense. Believed in the Enlightenment, scientific revolution & progress. As do I.

But I don't think they generally buy into the idea that Christianity was morally &factually reformed by the changes wrought by Protestantism

Yes. But is she typical of New Atheist values generally? I think New Atheists tend to regard differences between Cath & Prot as superficial.

They still think a god exists, deny evolution to an even greater degree, hold back gender equality & LGBT rights etc.

Sure, but I think some truth to the claim New Atheists have naive view of history which goes - Catholicism -> Reformation -> Enlightenment.

I mean, I roughly have the kind of naive view that the author is criticising. I want to interpret history as progress to the modern age.

Well, it is. I'm sorry, but it is. The last 500 years have been great for science & reason & liberalism. This is not naive. It's true.
