Yes, but "people saw women as children and that's wrong" is hardly equivalent to "people see children as children," no?

In my opinion, the question now is the exactly same as it was then: who is human, and therefore entitled to human rights?

Obviously some human rights are universal but surely some have to be contingent on a certain degree of mental competency.

      1. Yup, that's one of the things they said about women. 2. We don't require a mental competency test to register to vote. (Nor should we.)

Is it at all possible that a claim can be wrong of one group but right of another because of demonstrable differences between those groups?

Anything is possible. But to deny a demographic equal access to legal rights, I need better arguments.

What evidence would convince you that children are not capable of mature decisions?

If you're saying a decision-making and reasoning evolution should be required to vote, I disagree but respect the logical consistency.

What do you think should be the benchmark for having adult responsibilities? My 13 yr old could not function mentally as an adult.

We're working on getting her to keep her room tidy, keep on top of her homework & understand why she needs to get enough sleep.

(In all seriousness, you've also just made an argument for disenfranchising some senior citizens. Which I'm sure neither of us wants.)

I'm not making that argument. If you can prove, against all the evidence that children have the cognitive maturity to vote, go for it.

Wait -- I don't think *anyone* should have to pass a state competency test to vote. You're the one who implied that. 😉

OK, don't prove it then. But I don't think you'll convince many unless you do. Especially if they have children.

Oh, you're absolutely right there! I definitely won't convince many. People love to cling to familiar social structures. Change is slowww. 😊

So I assume you don't believe elderly people should have the right to vote unless they can look after themselves?
