Class is another thing that seems to differ across the Atlantic but I'm not sure. In the US, 'upper class' means the most rich & successful?

It’s supposed to be determined by us treasury but people use their own defs. For tax purposes, upper class is 500k/yr and up

Upper middle between 150k-500k Middle 60k-150k Lower Middle 40k-60k I think. Been a while since I looked

Right. Very much based on income which goes with the anti-aristocracy, self-made, American dream ethos.

Whereas here, class tends to be detected from accent and attitude. Mostly accent. I'd be instantly detectable as middle middle class.

Usually, yes. Tho they can also be poor personally but come from family with money. Still more about accent & education than earning.
