This seems a little arbitrary. When I was young & single, my criteria for wanting a man to approach me was more abt his looks than location.

I suspect fear of rejection more of a deterrent. There's no taboo against making friendly conversation as far as I know.

Yeah, see, I think it is the behaviour that's either threatening or non-threatening not the gender. 'Morning! Lovely day!' non-threatening.
