I suspect fear of rejection more of a deterrent. There's no taboo against making friendly conversation as far as I know.

I tend to think most people are nice. I imagine friendly rather than predatory approaches tho both motivated by attraction.

I do think men are worse than women, after extensive, er, anthropological research in bars and clubs. But not bad per se of course.
