I would need a breed that is okay with nothing but a cat for company 7.5 hours a day and only needs 1 long walk or 2 short a day. not easy.
That is most of them! I volunteered for a dog rehoming charity & we kept trying to convince people of this. Don't need to be home all day.

If a dog feels secure & knows you will be coming back, they're quite happy to sleep all day. They'd rather you never went to work, obviously

really? I need to convince my mrs of this. her main argument is both out all day and time. I have plenty of time when not working

That's perfect, then. Take the dog for a quick run in the morning - 20 mins will do - they'll sleep all day - longer 1 & cuddles in evening.

The awful thing is healthy dogs getting put down when people want them coz they think it wouldn't be fair to leave them alone in daytime
-
Nearly all our foster carers had full-time jobs & dogs get used to this & just snooze & greet them with joy when they come home.
