It's very strange. First thing every morning Miley (Labrador) goes to the back of the garden & stands in front of Prince's grave.

Yes, she was there when we buried his ashes & put the headstone up. We said his name a lot obviously & got upset.

Maybe she has some understanding. Or maybe she just knows we put a thing in the garden & it seemed a big deal so she'd better check on it.

But then I think she'd just run up to it & give it a sniff & come away again. Not stand there for 20 seconds looking at it. I don't know.

did she see you bury the ashes?
-
Yes, she was there. But I don't know how she'd know what they were. It's possible. There was crying & saying his name a lot.
-
Suggests she understood the significance of the ritual, which is interesting in itself
-
No it doesn't. You are anthropomorphizing.https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/how-dogs-use-smell-to-perceive-the-world …
-
Not sure how dogs being able to smell well tells us anything. We buried his ashes.
-
Their memory is smell. She could well remember Prince's smell and where he stood. You assume the smell has gone because our sense is so weak
-
His smell is everywhere. He lived here.
-
She could be honouring his standing spot in her own memorial, I suppose. In the same way we did.
