What a depressing way to look at relationships. I don't think men restrain themselves from hitting women for fear of public censure.

I think they'd feel shit about hitting someone much weaker than them. Why else do other men object & why is it seen as so much worse?

Your view is restricted to middle class Western men. Arabs, Asians, Africans feel little compunction about slapping women.
