We can discuss the role of the religion in society, the rights and responsibilities of believers & non-believers in it

We can, is that something you see as valuable?

Religion is rooted in personal beliefs expressed collectively. You have no right to expect me to agree with or even support your beliefs.

Agreed. But we still need to discuss what the boundaries of religion's influence on society can be & what we expect from believers.

Surely we know what the boundaries can be already. I want those influences reduced and fenced, to build a secular (and moral) society.

Of course we don't. It's a mess with everybody at each others throats. We need consistency. We can't reduce anything without discussion.

Then you need to pin the discussion down. It's a mess because unquestioned beliefs feed tribalism. How can you expect consistency?

Well, yes. I mean that we can require consistency in the rights of the religious and non-religious. And many religious ppl agree with this.

Don't understand why it is necessary to say this. The state as a proxy for "us" should be neutral viz a viz religion and laws should follow

Well, it's not necessary to tell me but we still have a way to go on this so discussion must be ongoing.

"All men are created equal". This being so, discriminating between people on the basis of religiosity is unacceptable. Consistent rights.

Say something contentious. I have a nasty feeling we are in full agreement.
