Counterpoint: some of us look at the news and don't wonder. We know too well what's going on with men, and wish we could do more to stop it.

Oh cobblers. Society already strongly penalises abusive and criminal men & abhors them. The vast majority of men are nothing of the kind.

Society creates them before it penalizes and abhors them.

We can certainly work on reducing violent crime but to do that we'd need to focus on criminality, not masculinity.

Not all masculinity. Just the parts that are destructive. The root of it is a failure to teach boys that there's strength in vulnerability.

I would say it in part involves not teaching boys how to deal w/ vulnerability. Some men deny or lash out, need the strength to handle it.

And those of us who've seen the paths men take to suicide know not being able to be vulnerable also makes men violent towards themselves.

OK, but is this supported. In some cultures, it is much more acceptable for men to cry & show strong emotion. Is there less violence there?

I don't know, but I know the US and Russia are places where it's much less acceptable and that they're both more violent than the EU.

Well, I don't know about Russia but it's certainly more acceptable for men to show emotion in the US than it is in the UK.

Well, and women tho actually. We have a stereotype of Americans as oversharers telling everyone their feelings.
