Counterpoint: some of us look at the news and don't wonder. We know too well what's going on with men, and wish we could do more to stop it.

Oh cobblers. Society already strongly penalises abusive and criminal men & abhors them. The vast majority of men are nothing of the kind.

Society creates them before it penalizes and abhors them.

We can certainly work on reducing violent crime but to do that we'd need to focus on criminality, not masculinity.

Not all masculinity. Just the parts that are destructive. The root of it is a failure to teach boys that there's strength in vulnerability.

I would say it in part involves not teaching boys how to deal w/ vulnerability. Some men deny or lash out, need the strength to handle it.

And those of us who've seen the paths men take to suicide know not being able to be vulnerable also makes men violent towards themselves.

OK, but is this supported. In some cultures, it is much more acceptable for men to cry & show strong emotion. Is there less violence there?

An Indian family member was telling me that Indian men are much more emotionally expressive than British men but that she's much safer here.

I agree men shld be encouraged not to be ashamed to talk abt feelings & admit vulnerability but don't know how much difference this wld make

Males are much more violent in all ape species. We mitigate this to a huge extent by expectations they won't be & penalties for being so.

But I suspect that when men are abusive, it will always be more violent than women whose abusiveness is often verbal & psychological.

Last time I looked up data on this, rates of violent abuse by men were higher but not monolithic, and psychological abuse was about equal.

I don't think psychological & verbal abuse is measured. Men don't &can't report every time a woman says something cruel or goes on for hours

I know I saw a reference to a study somewhere. I'll dig. The takeaway was it's about equally perpetrated, and mutual more often than not.
