I think they probably know that the news reports unusual events. There's no 'Man takes his mother out for lunch coz she's feeling a bit low'

Society creates them before it penalizes and abhors them.
-
We can certainly work on reducing violent crime but to do that we'd need to focus on criminality, not masculinity.
-
Not all masculinity. Just the parts that are destructive. The root of it is a failure to teach boys that there's strength in vulnerability.
-
I would say it in part involves not teaching boys how to deal w/ vulnerability. Some men deny or lash out, need the strength to handle it.
-
And those of us who've seen the paths men take to suicide know not being able to be vulnerable also makes men violent towards themselves.
-
OK, but is this supported. In some cultures, it is much more acceptable for men to cry & show strong emotion. Is there less violence there?
-
An Indian family member was telling me that Indian men are much more emotionally expressive than British men but that she's much safer here.
-
There's always more than one variable. In this case, a cultural difference in the acceptability of violence against women and children.

My society made one President.
-
He's a different kind of criminal, if he is one.

Heh. Have you seen who our President is? How 'strongly penalized!' The man literally abused and harassed his way to the top.

I love "cobblers" as an expression. But I also think society encourages or at least turns a blind eye to some bad parts of masculinity.

Only low-status abusive and criminal men. High-status abusive and criminal men are REWARDED.
