People who frame their 'centrism' as pragmatic - playing by the rules of the game to be most effective, does this work with every game?

I'm wondering if they'd argue that in, say Pakistan, it is still best to work with the system as the most effective way of achieving goals.

Take a central position & try to help the process of working out the kinks from there rather than be radical. Live to fight another day.

I'm not being sarcastic or making a point. I know a Pakistani, atheist liberal who is taking this tactic after much consideration.

Or do more of them, who are western, mean that they work within the game because it's the game they value - secular, liberal democracy

I like to look at what works. Used to be very much about the "injustice", now more about goal of ending it & most successful way to do so

If you break in a horse, it will do you now good to just demand he'll let you ride him. It will take forever & might make things worse.

But have patience, calm and strategy, and you'll get there much faster with longer lasting positive results. (if that makes sense)

Yes & do you think that would still be the tactic to take in Pakistan? Go with a middle position even if it's still horribly oppressive.

Genuinely, I mean. Not just pretending to in order to live whilst secretly working for liberalism & secularism.

Hm. I would look at this differently, I think. for example: Atheism. Radical position is to make it acceptable. To do so you efficiently,

you'd be wise to make smaller steps. Tackle corporate punishment. Then tackle jail sentences. Tackle blasphemy laws. etc.

So, I'm not sure you'd take the middle position ideologically. Your goal is radical. At least in Pakistan.

But your tactic would be "centrist". In order to achieve your radical goal.

So you'd start out by opposing those who said 'kill atheists' & those who said 'legalise atheism' & go with 'imprison atheists,'

I'd put it as: Take death-penalty of the table. Next step. Take jail-sentences of the table. Your goal is to stop atheists from being killed

But to be a centrist, you'd also have to oppose the other extreme - make atheism legal. Or you'd still be a radical but with modest goals.
