When received wisdom is the opposite but I am inclined to agree that verbal reasoning is something which attracts women at least as much.
Equal footing with things like maths but less interest. The cognitive ability that men have higher levels of on average is spatial awareness

-
This is to do with testosterone as women with higher levels have better spatial skills than those with lower. Also trans men gain it
-
Might also be something to do with fact that men's brains have more connections tween back & front of lobes, women across the two.

Also makes sense re: interest. I went into law even though my family pushed medicine on me pretty hard because I knew where I excelled.
-
I think we do know where our interests lie & in countries where women have most choice, they choose STEM least.
-
But it would be going too far to say social pressure & gender assumptions have no effect. I'm concerned we've been giving them 100%.
-
It's more complex than either or. Perfectly reasonable result if you accept both as the cause.
-
Yes, and I think this needs to be looked into rigorously. Plans here to make companies reveal their pay gaps & I'm in favour if done well.
-
No good just tallying up men & women's pay. Need breakdown for role, hours, qualifications, years worked etc. Then we can target problems.
-
Absolutely. You can't solve an equation if you ignore half the variables. Any solution requires all available information.

I am happy to admit that my sense of direction is fucking abominable. Also perfectly willing to accept that's at least part genetic.
-
It's a good excuse! Interesting that my daughter's is great & she will be one of the women in STEM. Well ahead in IT, maths & science.
