We are a story-telling species & this is a very dominant way that we are inclined to process & evaluate both reality & ethics.

But this is also a way we lead ourselves astray & enable ourselves to indulge motivated reasoning & confirmation bias & subjective ethics.

By all means, let's tell each other stories & discuss the deep psychological & moral meanings we find within them. Part of our humanity.

But when we do this almost exclusively & neglect the fruits of the Enlightenment in terms of science, reason, respect for evidence generally

...things go horribly wrong. Society got better when we established an expectation that arguments make logical sense & claims are evidenced.

I guess it's like art and craft. So many artists fail to find an audience because they never learn "the rules," or they ONLY go by the rules

Art doesn't have to make sense. We can have logically impossible art.

But you have to learn the rules before you can break them successfully. That's the difference between Picasso and someone painting random BS

Well, yes. But you can't break the rules in life. Can write stories abt magic that breaks laws of physics but not break laws of physics.

Ah,but if you want to tell a compelling story abt magic, you must ensure the magic obeys consistent rules, even if they're unique to the story

Yes, but I'm not disagreeing with that. It doesn't relate to my point that greater respect for reason & evidence made society advance.

I was just defending my original analogy, which is that the relation between stories &reality is like the relation between inspiration &craft

I see. Bear in mind that I'm the kind of person that sees a Jordan Peterson lecture my friends are making fun of & says "THAT GUY GETS ME" 😅

I think it is very human to construct stories that are meaningful to us & to find meaning in stories but not that this constructs reality.
