I think some people want atheism to be positive thing in itself rather than a disbelief in one thing so they have something to criticise.
But I'm not sure what there is to do about that apart from make strong, unwarranted assertions we don't believe to even it up a bit.
Of course, we do have beliefs & histories we defend but they're to do with positive rather than negative things.
Among Ali Rizvi's Twitter followers I am told "Atheist have no beliefs, we simply disavow belief." (I know they mean in God)
That's right, yes. We don't mean we don't believe in anything. I think sometimes ppl wld rather we made more assertions abt existence of God
Ali Rizvi constantly broadcast how faith has made the world a worse place but he won't talk about the contribution of atheism.
No, again because of the negativity of it. We can talk about the non-religious ideologies that make the world a worse place but ...
...it will be the positive beliefs of those ideologies that inspired evil. Ppl don't kill & die for the things they don't believe in.
Agree. My faith does not teach me to kill or die for faith.
I'm glad for the first. The latter tho? 'Greater love hath no man...' can inspire sacrifice.
Absolutely, every good humanist can learn and grow from the life of Jesus. In fact Jesus was good to people who didn't believe he was God.
Don't give the children's food to the dogs?
I understand that sounds harsh, but we believe the Gentile era had not started. Note that Jesus went ahead and healed her daughter.
Don't want to criticize but compare. Right are wrong Christianity makes promises, what are the promises of Atheism?
None. That's the thing I think you're not grasping about disbelief. It's a negative. We are defined by the things we do believe in.
eg You are defined by believing in Christ, not by any of the things you disbelieve in. I am defined by humanism, not by my disbelief in God.
Great, that's something I can get my brain around. Your the first one that's said that.
I respect your atheism and am suspicious of Christians who claim no doubt. I just think a little humility makes all ideas more acceptable.
You don't have to but respecting me would be good if I earn it! But I think humility for me, is saying I can't assert that there is no God.
Love that. Humility for me is some days I doubt.
I think belief is important but Jesus said murder comes from the heart not the head.
Yes, I'm not sure how meaningful that or how it relates to understandings of nature & mind in Christianity since.
