I don't think the decision not to have children should be evaluated in terms of 'selfishness'.
Not on a societal level in the sense of the society we have now & the ethics of being able to make this choice for one's own life.

There are scenarios in which it could be ethical not to have children - overpopulation, famine - or to have them - cancer-immune genes.

When it comes to making that choice and being reliant on tax credits or other benefits it does impact society.

Yes! But that is part of what I mean abt a personal choice being right or wrong for an individual. Obv, it affects society if u get it wrong

If you have kids & then don't take responsibility for them in various ways or raise them to be a danger or burden on society.

I am greatful for the above because of circumstances in my life, but sometimes wonder if my choice was selfish during those circumstances.

I have worried about whether I am maternal enough to be a good mother - too wrapped up in my own head much of the time.

But this is a problem on another level to whether motherhood is a duty or a individual's choice & judgement on ppl's view on this.
