Im less familiar with their thinking but seems to come down to whether they're rationalising limiting the 1st amendment or defending the 2nd

Obv, it depends who's in power but thinking of 'government' as an institution. Authority to be respected or necessary evil to be minimised?

What is patriotism? Loyalty to the land, the people, the institutions, the idea of the nation?

The left does the same. Both sides pick and choose when it comes to the 1st Amendment, and consequences.
-
I'm much more familiar with the inconsistencies of the left.
-
When it comes to the 1st, both sides want to be able to use it as a shield, without consequence. The right does it just as much.
-
Well, good. I'm more concerned abt those who want to limit it.
-
Honestly, I think that's the left, but the right does it with things like flag burning. 1st has to mean the same for all, or it's nothing.
-
Religion & patriotism for the right. Marginalised groups for the left.

Depends on how u define conservatives.
-
I'm talking abt ones who seem conflicted on whether ppl shld respect authority or stockpile guns in case they need to overthrow it
-
Oh yeah, I get that. Just saying that the word is being used to describe very different sets of beliefs. Sort of like "liberal".
-
Yeah. That's why I said 'some.' I realise that other conservatives are consistent & reasonable on idea of government.

GOP voters seem to be more loyal regardless of the leader
-
Do they? Do they not argue that the 2nd amendment must be upheld in case they need to overthrow it?
-
Recently, yes, they seem more loyal. They still argue that 2nd amendment nonsense but less in regard to Trump.

Suspicion, sometimes hatred, of authority is common among Americans. It's independent of political ideology.

Respect for authority is a conservative moral foundation.pic.twitter.com/fC4lYcP8N8

The idea that every person is the equal of every other often inspires the feeling that no one has a right to say what one can or cannot do.
