A right-wing version of Foucault? If we don't have principles, how do we know what to aim for and whether or not we've got there? https://twitter.com/brit_curt/status/911662069254164487 …
But I'm not talking about an explanation. "Everyone should have the same rights, freedoms & opportunities' is not an explanation.

I think it is, because many people didn't believe in that until others explained why it not being so was wrong.
-
We need to explain principles, yes. But this doesn't mean the explanations are the principles.
-
I think it does. The explanation comes first. Any foundation or principle is unnecessary. All the work is done by the explanation.
-
Sure, if you're just talking about making arguments for the most ethical thing to do. That is everything. The result is principled tho.
-
Is it the word 'principle' you don't like because you feel it stands alone, set in stone, without explanation?
-
I think so. A principle can be rejected, while a good explanation can't be without providing a better one. Or something.
-
You seem to agree that explanations are everything, so I'm just not seeing why we need principles.
-
That's just the name for a conclusion like 'Everyone should have the same rights.' It can be explained but is not an explanation in itself.
