And yet we have seen a surge to the right & when we ask why, we hear identity politics & failure to address Islamism lost them to the left

But those people can't have been left wing really otherwise theyd understand how Id pol and extremist Islam are not solved by right wing

No True Scotsman? But I think they're probably not life-long, deeply involved lefties. They're enough to give us what we have now tho.

And it's why its worth trying to fix the left. Win them back. There's always centrists willing who'll go either way based on issues.

And that's really how it should be done. How much credibility must the American Left have lost for someone like Trump to get elected?

Well the left didn't have a candidate in the race it was between a centrist and Trump

From my perspective as a Brit, yes. But different countries have different scales. I'm centre-left here. I'd be radical in Pakistan.

Yes and it's true for the US that it was centrist. So think left credibility in US not measure by Trumps win. Corbyns relative success works

Well, whatever you call the Democrats, then. There is a reason they were not electable & 'to stick it to the liberals' features highly.

Agree on that and I think a lot of the unelectablilty is because they are centrists so don't motivate enough people on the left.

But does that make them vote right?! Still better than conservatives! No, that doesn't explain the shift to the right.

But as I say it's not that the wcw voted for Trump in more number than they do for other republicans Trump got a lot of middle class

Is that the case? I saw Trump voters broken down to a lot of working class ppl but I admit, I don't know what proportion usually vote Rep.

But this is irrelevant anyway. It matters less who is voting right and more why they're not voting left & identity politics is a factor.

You did say it was a shift to the right in earlier tweet so was talking in that context. I broadly agree id pol in its current form an issue
