The values of the early 20th century would be considered traditional & conservative now but I think they were in line with liberal democracy
motives/rational of elite or people on the ground? agree with 1st, not 2st. that divide is mostly gone now.

For country certainly. Religion was already fading here. But above all for notions of goodness & freedom that liberals still value today.
Imo The Russians were fighting for monarchic values. Same aristocracy led to the Russia/England alliance. Without it no England in the war.

That's fine. I just think it is exceptionally important in the transition of western states from traditional values to modern ones.
