But I do think a respect for truth based on evidence helps us reduce the extent to which we can reason motivatedly better than narratives.

Yes. I think that's super important. But also, there's a huge trap making it easy to think that's what you're doing when it isn't
-
Absolutely. We are deeply flawed in our reasoning capacities. We can only take steps to minimise them & evidence & counterviews are key.

All of Haidt's studies show MOST people do motivated reasoning. Must be a small minority that don't right? Put em in charge!
-
They show this to be a human thing. If there are any humans who don't do this, they're probably too neurologically different to be helpful.
-
A "human" thing seems a bit general. Somewhere between autism and... ?
-
It is general. Humans have consistent flaws of thinking & motivated reasoning is one of them.
-
I recall Haidt talking about stats of 80-90% Surely good coders and surgeons are more rare! Happy to be corrected!
-
If he said that some people are free from motivated reasoning, you'll have to show me. Seems unlikely.
-
Unfortunately I only have Righteous Mind on audiobook. Hard to skim for stats! Might be an appendix somewhere...
