When it comes from the Left, of course.
I mean that the Left appears more likely to defend notion that right to free speech shouldn't shield you from consequences than the Right.
I'm not sure that's true because the right has historically been more keen on punishing people for blasphemy & traitorous ideas.
eg, drive here to criminalise burning poppies comes from the right as does the drive to punish people who criticise the nation or Xtianity.
Good counter examples.
I think it stands out from the Left right now coz it's new(ish) & in contrast to what they stood for before. The right is consistent in this
but what about when someones free speech is intending to take it away from/threaten others?
People have the right to talk about taking free speech away. Make arguments for it. Threats are not included in the principle of it.
So someone advocating murdering you is not a problem?
This is not covered in the context of free speech which is about expressing opinions & ideas.
So Nazi's get censored right? they advocate murder of fellow citizens.
No. This is an idea. A worldview. It needs countering on the level of ideas.
But they quite literally want to kill me. And they would if the thought the could get away with it.
All the more reason to deal with the idea.
Not really, all speech has consequences, while you're free to say what you will if you call my mama a c%£}, I'll beat your ass.
And then you can be arrested. But free speech is about the free expression of views & ideas, not insults.
We were talking consequences. Free speech only applies to government. 1st amendment has no jurisdiction in private dealings.
I'm not talking about the 1st amendment and wouldn't be even if I was American. Talking abt the principle of free expression of ideas.pic.twitter.com/omoKgh68kr
Fine, out if the context of rights we have the context of respect and compromise. Nobody has to listen. Speak all you wish but humbly.
