You can't insist that society not think or pretend not to think this is a horrible attitude. You can try to change their minds, obviously.

It's not like being sacked from your job as a chef or something. People are making free choices about who they want to represent them.

I would not agree with her being penalised in any way. But people might prefer to vote for someone else?

Agree. But that's also often the smokescreen. Like when someone isn't rented a flat for bigotry, but stated reason is choice of applicants.
