Yes. I think this is to do with a perception that men should be able to defend themselves &so bear some responsibility if they fail to do so https://twitter.com/CallMeMisterD/status/909027586155544576 …
Yes, we can think of many situations where a man cld reasonably decide learning to fight was a major responsibility.

But in current society, no. There are better and more worthwhile things he could decide to devote his time to.

But self defense now is a worthy endeavor, unless you want to outsource your personal protection.
-
Or if you don't need it on a regular basis and would rather spend your time on skills you do need.
-
I say it's a basic human skill that's important.
-
OK, I don't think its a moral responsibility. Take your own risks.
-
It's not a moral responsibility if it's just concerning yourself. Nobody has a moral responsibilty to preserve their own safety or life.
-
Well, that is my point so I don't know where we have gone here.
-
Because it seemed like you were entirely down playing the importance of self defense,as if it's for less sophisticated types.
-
No! I am saying that we are less sympathetic to male victims of violent crime coz of a perception they should be able to defend themselves.

"More worthwhile" might depend on one's priorities.
-
That's the point, yes. It might be more worthwhile for many people to devote their spare time to study than to learning to hit things.
-
What you call learning to hit things makes it sound bad, but self defense can be learning how not to be hit.
-
I just don't care enough about this to argue about it. If a man is mugged, he shld not be blamed coz he didn't know self-defence.
-
Some ppl may want to spend their spare time learning how to hit or not hit things. Others may have more exclusively intellectual interests
-
This is the modern urban intellectual POV.

Or women, Vietnam war being just one example.
-
Yes, OK, but that doesn't change my point.
-
Knowing how to defend yourself makes you less likely to be attacked, thus safer.
-
OK, but that doesn't change my point. So does staying in. I still want to go out tho.
