WaPo and a number of other outlets did indeed come out with "explanatory" coverage treating it as a non-terrorist organization.

Most of those outlets, including WaPo, immediately reversed when Politico revealed Antifa's been designated as terrorist since April 2016.

Some, however, still persist, more to the edges of the fringe now, but that desire to give Antifa a pass is very much still apparent.
