We can be unsure of what exactly made them adaptive & whether specific behaviours are adaptive or culturally specific but that's different.

Yes that's one reason. Though the precise realtionship between brain and mind is highly controversial. Another is teleonomy Vs teleology.

So much of the former depends on definitions. The latter doesn't really help us establish whether humans differ mentally from fish.

I've only seen it when metaphysicians argue the former is just a way to deny the existence of God. Very tedious.

Yes. Those who would deny evolution a role psychology often find themselves alined with who would deny it one in biology
