Helen Pluckrose added,
Because, in reality, people change their minds all the time. If you think about things you believe now that you didn't 5 years ago...?
This almost never happens: Person 1: I think this. Person 2: No, because evidence & argument. Person 1: Oh yes, I see I was wrong now.
This happens a lot: P1: I think this. P2: No, coz evidence & argument. P1: Nope, I'm right P1: *thinks abt it later. qualifies ideas a bit*
This even better: P1:I think this. P2:I think you make a lot of good points but wonder abt this P1:Thanks! I see your point but... *goes on*
Julian Baggini makes some interesting points in 'The Edge of Reason' as to why this happens much less than it should...
There is some good stuff out there. We are unwilling to change minds but certain approaches make ppl more willing to meet you half way.
We focus too much on the detail, which leads to sophistry, rather than the origin of the underlying differences.
Yes. This is why I like Jonathan Haidt so much.
Looks interesting... I'll check out his work / books.
A Righteous Mind is *the* one.
