Because of the long medieval period, yes. But the ancient Greeks & modern period show us people argue about very many other things.

Politics is prime. Science depends on it and so does all of academia. Even arguments about sports fall into this category.

But I'm really talking about now. Most arguing for and against views are not religious in the west. Universities full of them.

In the pub, people are more likely to argue about the best way to do all sorts of things before they get to religion.

I suspect this has always been the case, tbh.Manuscripts of religious arguments survive but more common was probably best way to raise sheep
