My husband wasn't affected by compulsory religious worship in schools. He didn't pay much attention. Never believed. I listened & believed.

My friend thought religion was fairly benign until she joined the campaign for the right-to-die with dignity & found who is blocking it.

It's the early stages of atheism, it's the rejection of old beliefs and affirmation of a new identity. Happened to me during my adolescence.

I think this is true in much of Europe. I understand why the sense of identity & need to group remains in religious cultures.

It's true that most European grow up in a mostly individualist society, even if they are religious.

People in the American South remind me they are surrounded by God talk constantly & must either lie or be forced to argue.

An atheist may wish there were a god. They may be a pro-theist atheist. Also, a believer may fight a god he believes. An anti-theist theist.
