Maybe not to you & you can exempt yourself from general conversation. I'll still judge an opinion on its merits tho.

How can the opinion of a white man on the experiences of, say, a black woman have merit. That's what Adrian is talking about?

Imagine me, a childless woman, telling a bereaved parent, I know how you feel. This [insert unsolicited advice] will help." Just don't do it

Oh, you certainly don't have to claim to know how other people feel about things but we share common human emotions & can always empathise.

I refer again to this analogy. To think you can "always empathize" is the epitomize of privelege. https://twitter.com/ttyger/status/905185825918337024 …

Nope. Everyone can empathise. We have common human emotions and are individuals. But most of the time not empathising anyway.

I would empathise with you. I know grief. But this is a personal thing & a friend's role is to listen. Social justice affects...well, society

Empathy is more personal. Sorry, but you can't really empathize with a black persons struggles. Have all the sympathy you want.

Yes, we can. We can all empathise with each other. If I have a miscarriage & feel grief, a man can know what grief feels like.

When empathising is called for. More often people accused of X-splaining for making ethical arguments, not claiming to know how others feel.

It isn't about "feelings" it's about experience. Empathy will never substitute for experience.

It isn't usually about either when I discuss things. Its about facts, data and ethics. They're available to everyone.

When I was a kid (19) I once told a Vietnam chopper medic that, "yes, I do think I understand what that was like for you." Just imagine.
